According to CDC here is the difference between the following:
• Cleaning – the removal of foreign material (e.g., soil, and organic material) from objects and is normally accomplished using water with detergents or enzymatic products.
• Disinfecting – a process that eliminates many or all pathogenic microorganisms, except bacterial spores, on inanimate objects. In healthcare settings, objects usually are disinfected by liquid chemicals or wet pasteurization.
• Sanitizing – lowers the number of germs on surfaces or objects to a safe level, as judged by public health standards or requirements. The process works by either cleaning or disinfecting surfaces or objects to lower the risk of spreading infection.
• Sterilization - destroys all microorganisms on the surface of an article or in a fluid to prevent disease transmission associated with the use of that item.
